When is the best time to book a safari holiday?
Posted on October 9, 2020 at 3:48 pm
Although there are many restrictions still in place especially across much of Africa regarding travel, you can still plan ahead for your safari holiday. Ideally the best time to book a safari holiday is at the very least a year in advance. Space is often very limited at the more exclusive resorts, so booking last minute may mean you have very limited availability as to where you can go.
Many companies are now offering discounts if you book your safari ahead of time in place of last-minute discounts. This allows hotels and lodges to be able to manage their books properly and plan.
Do not rush in to booking anything too quickly. As safari holidays are often not cheap it may be that you only get to do it once so you want to make sure it is right. Rushing into a safari holiday may end in disappointment and you may find that you do not get to go everywhere or do everything you wanted to. It is always better to delay it for a few months to give you time to do your research than rush into it and regret it. Read plenty of reviews before committing to a booking to be sure you have chosen the right company to go with.

Why not combine a wine tour of South Africa with a safari?
Posted on September 20, 2020 at 12:25 pm
When planning the safari holiday of a lifetime to South Africa it is certainly worth considering combining it with a tour of its vineyards and impressive wine estates. Many travel companies offer these packages as additions to their safari holidays and it is a popular choice for tourists.
Wine tours can be tailored to your requirements and booked through one of the companies that offer this service. Estate safaris and gourmet wine experiences are also available to add a touch of luxury to your holiday. Many wine estates have excellent restaurants so if you are hungry after your tour you can indulge in some traditional South African fare washed down with top quality wine.
Your amazing wine tour can be combined with alternative activities to further enhance your holiday such as a visit to a penguin colony or a boat cruise where you may be able to see whales in their natural habitat. Some tour operators offer a cultural experience alongside the wine estate tour as South Africa has a rich heritage of art including sculpture and music.
The chance to have two or three wonderful and quite different experiences in the same holiday is an opportunity not to be missed.

Stopping the dreaded mosquitos in their tracks
Posted on July 24, 2020 at 10:24 am
Although visiting Africa for some is a memorable experience it is one of the countries that does a problem with mosquitos. Some of these mosquitos can also carry malaria which is why you must take as much care as possible to avoid getting bitten and making your holiday memorable for the wrong reasons.
If you are travelling to certain parts of Africa, you will probably need vaccinations and so it is worth checking with your doctor a few months before you travel. There are however a number of safari camps located in malaria free zones and if travelling with children, you should definitely select one of these resorts.
In practical terms you need to make sure that you cover up as much of your skin as possible, making it a lot harder for you to get bitten. Mosquito repellent should be worn but be sure to buy one that is a DEET or picaridin based repellent as these will offer the best protection from the awful bites.
Most supermarkets and health shops sell Mosquito repellent bands and although there is no real evidence that these are effective, many people swear by them and wear them constantly when on their African safari holiday.

Are African safari holidays safe for children?
Posted on June 23, 2020 at 8:03 pm
When you plan to splash out on the holiday of a lifetime to experience an African safari you may wonder whether it is going to be a safe environment for your family. There are it has to be said some possible dangers when on a safari holiday, but with essential and careful planning and vigilance while you are out and about your family can have an amazing experience that will be unforgettable for years to come.
It is important before you travel to find out whether it is necessary to have any vaccinations that are recommended for the area you are visiting as there are diseases prevalent in some areas that we do not see in the UK.
It will be vital to use high strength insect repellent to avoid nasty bites and stings and this will need to be applied frequently. Plug in repellents will also need to be used in hotel rooms as an additional safeguard to mosquito nets.
The sun can be very strong at certain times of the year so a very high factor sun cream should be used on exposed skin but long-sleeved tops and long trousers for journeys into the reserves is wise to protect young skin from bites and sunburn.
When you arrive at your safari accommodation it is a good idea to instruct your children to stay with you at all times especially when on excursions so that you are sure of their safety.

Knowing what to pack for an African Safari holiday
Posted on February 24, 2020 at 10:02 pm
Booking an African safari holiday can be a really exciting time. It may be that you have saved up for a good few years and the time has finally come when you can book the holiday of your dreams.
Once the holiday is booked you need to allow plenty of time to think about what you need to take with you and buy new clothing / accessories if you need them. You should have been made aware of any luggage restrictions that will be imposed on internal flights whilst in Africa, as the airlines are very strict on the size and weight of the luggage that you can take on board as often these are only little planes. If you have not been told this, double check with your tour operator.
There are some specialist companies out there that offer a wide range of luggage, clothing and accessories that have been designed for people who are going on a safari holiday and although some of this may be a little expensive, it is often worth the investment. Back packs or suitcases that have been specifically designed with the weight restrictions in mind are your best option.

Safari holidays can be one of the best experiences of your lifetime, opening your eyes to sights that you could never of imagined, but you should try and take precautions to try and ensure that everyone remains safe when travelling to and from your chosen destination in South Africa as well as when actually on the safari trips.
You may worry about the safety aspect of a safari holiday especially if you are going to be taking children with you, but actually the safari trips themselves tend to be very safe as the guides know where to go, where not to go and how to read the animals. The main risks involved do not always come from the animals that you may encounter. If you book a guided safari holiday, the tour guides make it their job to familiarise themselves with the surrounds, carrying out risk assessments and constantly monitoring the safety aspects that may affect to the public.
You should never carry large amounts of cash around, especially in urban areas in South Africa. Take travellers cheques and use credit cards for bigger purchases or pay in advance if possible.
As with airport security advice, you shouldn’t ever leave any luggage or personal belongings unattended whether this be on a safari vehicle or in the accommodation lobby area.
